Software Companies in Bangladesh
Note: This list contains names and particulars of software companies who are members of BASIS--Bangladesh Association of Software Industry & Services . However it should be noted that there are quite few other leading software houses in Bangladesh , who are not members of BASIS . Some companies prefer not be member of any particular association . So this list by no means is exhaustive , but only to highlight some of the software houses who are members of BASIS . Tanvir Chowdhury Global Amitech Bangladesh – the verdant deltaic plain around the confluence of three mighty rivers of Asia, namely, Ganges, Jamuna and Brahmaputra – is known to the world at large as home to over one hundred million of the world’s poorest. What however is not known of this once agriculturally abundant land is the fact that it is also home to one of the world’s biggest ready-made-garments industries and that nearly ten million of its people are college graduates. This vast pool of educated workforce, all of whom can read write and understand spoken English is shaping a new industry in Bangladesh i.e. the information technology industry. Use of computers in Bangladesh as a research and data manipulation tool dates back more than 30 years. Today computers are widely used in offices, businesses, educational institutions, at home and in the filed. In one of the most progressive policy orientation towards IT of any nation on earth today, Bangladesh allows 100% duty-and-tax-free import of all computer hardware and software. The state provides many other fiscal and infra-structural facilities to accelerate the use of computers and the growth of the IT industry. The IT industry is represented by two industry bodies, namely Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) and Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS). BASIS, established in 1998, is a relatively new industry association whose membership count stands at 34 today and is growing steadily. All major software development and data-processing firms of the country are its members. BCS on the other hand was formed in 1988 and represents computer business firms in general; its membership stands at more than 100 today. All major hardware and software manufacturers such as Acer, Compaq, Dell, Digital, HP, IBM, ICL-Fujitsu, Microsoft, Novell, Oracle, SCO, Sun Microsystems, Unisys and others are represented for long in Bangladesh. The size of the IT industry is estimated at around USD 150 million which is growing at more than 20% each year. Among the major IT projects already done/undertaken in Bangladesh are :

IT report :, Export Promotion Bureau Computer software development and processing services is a potential sector in Bangladesh’s export portfolio. The country is equipped with a sizeable manpower skilled in computer programming and systems management; a greater portion has been found ‘easily trainable’ and quite a number of private institutes, besides public universities and colleges, are presently engaged in imparting necessary knowledge and skill the field. The younger generation of the country has displayed immeasurable enthusiasm in mastering this state-of-the art technology, making indelible mark on the world software scenario. To cite an example, Bangladesh ranked top in the A.C.M. (Association of Computing Machines). On line Internet Software Contest conducted by a Spanish University on 28 May 1998. Bangladesh stands out distinctly as a potential software-exporting nation, considering the analytical and technological ability of its people. Against this backdrop, the Government of Bangladesh made an in depth study on how the software sector of the country can be designed to suit the needs of the global market. To follow up on the outcome of the study and to monitor the issues associated with the sector’s growth and development, a high powered National Standing Committee on Software Export has since been formed. This Standing Committee has brought together the concerned government offices organizations and leaders of the software trade to work in unison to study the problems and prospects of the sector. The Committee has helped the Government with recommendations in order to put the sector on a fast track growth. In line with the priority that the govt. Has attached to the sector, customs duties and taxes on import of computer hardware and software have been totally withdrawn. This has brought down prices of computers. Due to low operating expenses of business and low margins, PC retail pries in Bangladesh in among lowest the world. The Govt. Is also going ahead with its project of setting up an Information Technology Park which will provide the country’s software houses with valuable infra-structural support in preparing and transmitting their output. Again, for protection of software an appropriate Copyright Law is being finalized and it will be enacted soon. Granting of working capital to prospective of software exporters is also on the government’s agenda. Finally, as part of its marketing drive, Bangladesh is scheduled to participate in all international software fairs. Bangladesh is now considered an emerging tiger in South Asia with its attractive investment potentials. Govt. Has taken measures that adequately protect and encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Bangladesh. In this connection some of the incentives are mentioned below :
For accelerating private investment in the country, the government established a Board of Investment (BOI) headed by the Prime Minister of the Republic. A one stop Service Centre has been set up in BOI to assist the investors in obtaining essential service from one place smoothly and expeditiously. The focal point in Bangladesh for co-ordinating and synthesizing all activities, local and external, leading towards export of commodities and services from the country is the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). This organization has been active since decades in nourishing nascent and potential export sectors of the country, ‘software’ being the latest and the most promising on its agenda.
