EB2000 Proposes Plans in Support of Year 2010 Goals for the IT Sector

EB2000 called for the creation of four groups, comprising of both resident and non-resident Bangladeshi professionals, experts, academicians and entrepreneurs, to identify areas and avenues of action in support of evaluating and implementing Prof. Yunus' year 2010 goals for the information technology sector in Bangladesh.  These four groups will be addressing issues related to:

  • Telecommunication Reform;
  • Technology Options;
  • Business Development; and
  • Capacity Building.

Prof. Yunus, in his recently delivered Justice Muhammad Ibrahim Memorial Lecture, proposed that it was indeed possible for Bangladesh to make significant strides in the area of poverty alleviation by harnessing the market opportunities offered by the burgeoning market for IT-enabled services.  This market is projected to reach $180 Billion by the year 2010.  If the right situations are created, Professor Yunus thought that it was possible for Bangladesh to capture at least $5 Billion of the projected market and bring fundamental changes in the lives of its impoverished millions.

The notification allows EB2000 to operate as a publicly supported organization, and not as a private foundation for the advance ruling period beginning from February 12, 1999 and ending on December 31, 2003.  Grantors and contributors may rely on this determination that EB2000 is a publicly supported organization until 90 days after the end of the advance ruling period.
